The Halifax peninsula is separated into four areas:
South End, West End, North End, and Central Halifax . The peninsula is densely populated with both old and newer houses and includes commercial and industrial spaces and city hospitals. All parts of Peninsula of Halifax are no more than 10 minutes away from the Downtown Core by car. Additionally, there is a well developed public transportation system in Halifax, with a busy bus service and a convenient working ferry service which brings residents from downtown Halifax to Dartmouth.

The South End of the Peninsula has traditionally been considered the most affluent area and surrounds both Dalhousie University, St. Mary's University and city hospitals. Point Pleasant park in Halifax's South end, feature acres of walking trails, Many Haligonians take advantage of this park to either jog, or walk their dog along the ocean on a daily basis. The housing in this area is typically at least 70 years old, however, a great number of these homes have been renovated over the years. In addition a number of these older houses have been converted to rental properties, to meet the needs of students at the two Universities. Single Family Homes in the South End start often at over $500,000 range, and can be over $2,000,000 for waterfront Property. Finding a house to buy in this area can be a challenge. The West End of Halifax has become a trendy Area, sought after by young families who want the convenience of living in the City, but don't want the high prices of living in the South End. The West End offers average sized homes and quiet neighbourhoods. Older subdivision in this area for example are Westmount and Pine Acres It is conveniently located close to the downtown business core. The North end of Halifax is becoming more popular as well. The prices for homes in this part of the city are some of the lowest on the peninsula. There are definitely nice areas to buy a home in but there are also those you should stay away from.
